Emergency Orthodontist Grants Pass, OR

A happy patient listens while her orthodontist uses a dental model to educate her about the different orthodontic treatments available. Orthodontic treatment moves your teeth gradually, and most of the time that process is uneventful. But brackets break, wires shift, and discomfort can cross the line into something that needs attention sooner rather than later. Knowing which situations call for a same-day visit to our emergency orthodontist — and what you can do in the meantime — makes a real difference in keeping your treatment on track.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Not every orthodontic problem is a true emergency, but the following situations typically warrant a call to our office:
•  A broken or loose bracket that has detached from the tooth and is causing irritation or has shifted out of position
•  A poking or protruding wire that is pressing into the cheek, gum, or tongue
•  A lost or broken retainer, especially if teeth feel like they are shifting
•  A loose band around a molar
•  Significant swelling, bleeding, or pain around the teeth or gums that develops during treatment
•  A wire that has slid to one side and is poking into the soft tissue at the back of the mouth

Some of these feel more urgent than others. A sharp wire digging into your cheek is painful and needs to be addressed quickly, while a loose bracket that is not causing any discomfort may be able to wait until the next available appointment. When in doubt, call us. We would rather help you assess the situation over the phone than have you managing unnecessary pain at home.

Managing Orthodontic Issues At Home

There are several things you can do to stay comfortable before you are able to come in:
•  Poking wire: Use the eraser end of a pencil or a clean cotton swab to gently bend the wire away from the tissue. If it cannot be repositioned, place orthodontic wax over the end to protect your cheek or gum until we can see you.
•  Broken bracket: If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it is irritating. Do not try to remove it yourself. If it has come off completely, keep it and bring it to your appointment.
•  Lost retainer: Wear your previous retainer if you still have it and it fits comfortably. Do not force it. Contact us right away — even a short gap without a retainer can allow teeth to shift.
•  General soreness: Over-the-counter pain relievers appropriate for your age and health can help with discomfort after adjustments. Rinsing with warm salt water can soothe irritated gum tissue.

Orthodontic wax is inexpensive and widely available at most pharmacies. Keeping a small supply at home is one of the simplest ways to manage minor irritation on your own.

How We Treat Orthodontic Emergencies

When you come in to Robinson Orthodontics, we will assess the situation and address the problem as efficiently as possible. A broken bracket is re-bonded to the tooth. A wire that has shifted is trimmed or repositioned. If a band has loosened, we re-cement it. In cases involving soft tissue irritation or a longer-term issue like a lost retainer, we work with you on the appropriate next step, whether that means fabricating a new appliance or adjusting your treatment timeline.

Most orthodontic emergencies are straightforward to resolve in the office. The bigger concern is waiting too long, since some issues, like a loose wire, can cause soft tissue injury or allow teeth to move in ways that complicate your overall treatment plan.

Reducing Your Risk Of Orthodontic Emergencies

A few consistent habits go a long way toward preventing problems:
•  Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that put stress on brackets and wires
•  Wear a mouthguard during any contact sport or physical activity
•  Follow the care instructions we give you for cleaning around your brackets and bands
•  Attend all scheduled adjustment appointments so we can catch small issues before they become bigger ones
•  Store your retainer in its case rather than wrapping it in a napkin or leaving it loose in a bag
